Sub-GHz Wireless Serial Integration | Obeita

Project status: proposed configuration. Final specifications and delivery scope require project validation.

Replace selected low-rate serial cable links with a compact sub-GHz radio module. The design supports evaluation of transparent, addressed and master-node communication patterns for distributed controllers, signs, lighting or monitoring points.

Three data-routing patterns

In transparent mode, modules using the same address and channel exchange the serial payload. Addressed mode adds a destination address and channel to direct a transmission. In master-node mode, the master selects a destination node while node reports return to the master on the shared channel. The application must define who may transmit and how collisions or missing responses are handled.

Host integration and operating modes

UART RX/TX carries the host data, with a direction-control signal available for an RS485 interface design. Reset and transmit/receive indicators help commissioning; the radio antenna connection is separate from the serial interface. Low-power variants and air wake-up are evaluated against actual update intervals, wake latency and host sleep behaviour rather than a single advertised current figure.

Frequency planning for export products

The material describes a 470 MHz/sub-GHz direction, but different labels and parameter tables do not give one consistent operating range. The actual tuning range, output power and permitted channels must be selected for the destination market. This serial radio architecture is not automatically LoRaWAN, and neither range nor sensitivity figures should be treated as a complete end-product radio specification.

Proposed design configuration

These are configuration inputs for development; the final assembly, firmware and acceptance tests define the delivered specification.

Item Configuration
Link type Sub-GHz serial radio
Routing modes Transparent / addressed / master-node
Host signals UART RX/TX, direction, reset, TX/RX status
Antenna External RF antenna connection
Power modes Normal / low-power variant evaluation
Frequency decision 470 MHz direction; exact range and market suitability to confirm

Project questions

Is transparent mode the same as addressed mode?

No. Transparent peers share address/channel settings; addressed frames select a destination explicitly. The host packet format must match the chosen mode.

Is this automatically compatible with LoRaWAN gateways?

No. A serial radio data link does not establish LoRaWAN join, security or network-server compatibility.
